Movies are an art form that makes you think. I recently saw the movie Mercy, where a man, played by Chris Pratt, gets accused of murdering his wife. An artificial intelligence, or AI, judge decides if you are innocent because in this court, you are guilty until you prove that you’re innocent.

You have 90 minutes to prove your innocence, or you die.

To me, this is an awesome concept, especially given the time we live in today with AI getting more powerful. How far will we go with AI? Personally, I do not know.

Movies, or any art form that makes you think—whether it be music, books, paintings, or any art you can think of—does it make you think about the future? Does it make you think, “How can this make me a better person?”

I know movies are make-believe, but do they make you think about how they relate to your life? The good movies touch your emotions. They make you laugh, they make you cry, and they make you want to be better.

Although the movie Mercy did not make me laugh or cry, it did make me think about how I do not want AI to become a judge. I do not want to be part of that future where AI is my judge and executioner, because AI can’t understand humans. No matter how much it learns, it will never be able to truly understand us.

Although Mercy was okay, it wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, but it did make me think—and I like movies that make you think and make you feel. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good movie you can just watch and not think about anything every now and then, but for the most part, I like movies that make you think about life, maybe make you cry, and of course make you laugh.

So I give the movie Mercy a 7, but I am going to bump it up to an 8 out of 10 because it did make me think, and to me, that’s one thing a movie should do.

How about you? What makes a good movie to you?

As always, live long and prosper. Until next time, my friends 🖖
